Munchkin Tournament - Aftershock Yellow Cake Rules

General Munchkin Aftershock Yellow CakeTournament Rules.

Nuke-Con will host an official Munchkin tournament at the Yellow Cake Nuke-Con aftershock. The tournamant will use the long version of Steve Jackson Games’ Munchkin Tournament rules version 1.51 – March 2013, posted at www.worldofmunchkin.com/tournament.
The Tournament Organizer will be on site during the entire event to adjudicate the tournament.

Player Eligibility.

This will be an open Munchkin Tournament. As such, any player is eligible to play except: players specifically prohibited from participating by Steve Jackson Games or Nuke-Con.


  • A person who receives compensation from SJ Games for working on or with Munchkin in any capacity may participate provided they disclose this status at the start of the game.
  • Any ineligible player will be subject to removal from the tournament.
  • This will not be a national or international championship tournament. As such, Nuke-Con will not be reporting the winner to control@sjgames.com.

Player Responsibilities.

  • Follow the rules as interpreted by the judges and Tournament Organizer;
  • Play in a sportsmanlike manner;
  • Treat each other with dignity and respect – no metagaming;
  • If appealing a judge’s ruling(s), the player must demonstrate how the ruling was not in accordance with the official tournament rules; and
  • Players may not waive any penalties on behalf of their opponents.

Judge Responsibilities.

  • Deliver fair and impartial rulings;
  • Help the Tournament Organizer ensure the tournament runs smoothly;
  • Take action to resolve any rules infractions in a timely manner;
  • Extend the duration of the tournament if a ruling requires more than 1 minute.

Appeals to the Tournament Organizer.

Players may appeal a judge’s ruling to the Tournament Organizer after the judge rules (no pre-emptive appeals). The player will be responsible for demonstrating how the judge’s ruling was not in accordance with the official tournament rules.

Tournament Mechanics.

General.

  • Signup: 10:00 am – 11:30 am. Players sign up for the tournament. Maximum number of players allowed will be 24 (6 players / table X 4 tables = 24 players).
  • Seeding: 11:30 am – 12:00 am. Judges and Tournament Organizer assign tables via seeding. Judges will distribute players as evenly as possible with 4 – 6 players per table.

Per the official tournament rules, the round structure will depend upon the number of players that sign up. Sign up ends promptly at 11:30 am.

Three Rounds.
If more than 12 players sign up:
Round 1:

  • Play phase: 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm. All who sign up will play. Time includes rules explanations.
  • Tournament Organizer will seed tables for the 2nd round.
  • Interphase: 1:30 pm – 2:00 pm. Judges record results.
Round 2:
  • Play Phase: 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm. All who sign up will play.
  • Interphase: 3:30 pm – 4:00 pm. Judges record results. The top 6 players (7 in the event of a tie) with the highest tournament level will advance.
Final Round:
  • Play phase: 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. The top 6 players (7 in the event of a tie) will play.
  • Final Judging: 6:00 pm – 6:30 pm. Judges record results.
  • Announcement of winner: 6:30 pm.

Two Rounds.
If only 4 – 12 players sign up:
Round 1:
  • Play phase: 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm. All that sign up will play. Time includes rules explanations.
  • Interphase: 1:30 pm – 2:00 pm. Judges record results.
Final Round:
  • Play Phase: 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm. The top 6 players (7 in the event of a tie) with the highest tournament level will advance.
  • Interphase: 4:00 pm – 4:30 pm. Judges record results.
  • Announcement of winner and awarding of prizes: 4:30 pm.

Round Time Limits.
  • Final round: 120 minutes, including rules explanations.
  • •All other rounds: 90 minutes, including rules explanations.

Once a round it over, the Tournament Organizer and judges will direct all players to put their cards down. A player who is wining a combat as time expires is entitled to the level gained from the fight.

General Rules and Policies


  • Nuke-Con prohibits discrimination for membership and in all its programs and activities
  • Nuke-Con staff reserves the right to eject disruptive individuals from the convention, without refund
  • Nuke-Con prohibits weapons and alcohol in the convention space.

    • Costume, fake, prop style weapons are permitted if they are in no way dangerous to attendees, nor could be mistaken for real weapons. Nuke-Con staff will determine on a case-by-case basis whether a costume, fake, prop, weapon does not meet this guideline. Staff decisions will be final.


  • Insufficient Funds Policy
    While those of us who work with Nuke-Con understand mistakes happen, we also understand that Nuke-Con is a business. Due to repeated problems with bounced checks, we have felt the need to come up with a policy for ISF.


    • Any returned checks will have a $25 fee attached to them.
    • Con Cash will not be accepted as payment for this fee.
    • Anyone who has a delinquent account with Nuke-Con will not be permitted to register for the convention or sign up for any events until all fees (membership, t-shirt and/or ISF) are paid in full.
    • Failure to pay in a timely manner may result in Nuke-Con putting persons on a cash-only basis.
    • Persons who fail to make restitution may: be banished from all Nuke-Con events; have the past due account reported to a collection agency; have other actions taken as deemed necessary and appropriate by Nuke-Con’s Board of Directors and its legal counsel.

Game Master Rules


  • Gamemasters must check in at GM Registration 10 minutes before their event is scheduled to begin. Please conclude your event by the scheduled end time or make arrangements with Game Registration to move to a floater table.
  • GMs and gamers will be responsible for cleaning up their gaming area before they leave it.
  • Gamemasters are providing their games to us as a service; GMs have final say as to who may participate in their events. GMs have to option to eject players from their games.
  • Electricity for GMs or players is available only by special arrangement before the convention and at extra cost. If you need to use electricity (including a computer) for your game, please contact the GM Coordinator.
  • GMs are asked to be mindful of the volume level of their games and to be courteous of those around you.
  • GMs must notify the convention if they will be unable to run their event. Please email the GM Coordinator to cancel. Please do this ASAP.
  • GMs that are repeated violators of these rules will not be allowed to run events.
